Small Scale Event – Eton College Sports

5 February, 2019

We provide the medical cover for the school sports afternoon throughout the Michaelmas Half each year, covering up to 29 games being played simultaneously on the college pitches, at 3 sites around Eton.

The school takes the health and wellbeing of their boys, and those visiting from other schools, very seriously. Together with The Event Medicine Company, a clinical package is put together each year to ensure participants and spectators can receive medical attention quickly and without putting undue strain on the already busy College Health Centre.

Although this is a small scale event, the College grounds are quite extensive which means we typically need 2 small First Aid tents (at remote sites, looking after 5 pitches – including a dedicated post for the 1st XV rugby), 1 large Medical Post (on the main field, looking after 24 pitches of football and rugby), plus 1 Paramedic crewed ambulance.

The College has up to 29 games of football and rugby being played during any one school sports afternoon. As a result, capability requirements are based on discussions with the College, taking into account previous numbers and the complexity of boys’ injuries from past experience and records, alongside other relevant factors.

The staffing compliment for this size of event typically consists of a medical cover team of 8, comprising of:

  • 1 Team Leader (Clinical Lead)
  • 1 Nurse
  • 1 Paramedic
  • 3 First Aid staff
  • 1 Paramedic and Ambulance Assistant crewed ambulance
