A Case Study - RAF Leuchars

The Event Medicine Company has provided a Casualty Clearing Centre as part of the overall medical plan for the RAF Leuchars Air Show in Scotland since 2005.




At RAF Leuchars the Casualty Clearing Centre was located in the University Air Squadron hangar and in a clear-span marquee covering the rear car park. The components were delivered from the Event Medicine Company’s base in Aldershot in a 40 ft trailer and it took 6 staff 3 hours to erect the Casualty Clearing Centre.

The capability supplied was as required by both the Royal Air Force and NHS Fife and consisted of:

  • Reception and triage
  • Intensive care beds x 5
  • Resuscitation teams x 4
  • Holding beds x 20
  • Minor casualty treatment area
  • Body holding area

This facility was scaled to handle 200 casualties in the event of a major incident.


 The Casualty Clearing Centre had a staff of 56 with the following skill mix:

  • Doctors x 11 including anaesthetics, A&E and primary care
  • Nurses x 19 including A&E, intensive care and primary care
  • Operating department practitioners x 2
  • Paramedics x 9
  • Ambulance technicians x 2
  • First aid staff x 4
  • Administrative staff x 6
  • Logistic staff x 3
